This is an introductory course on cryptography and data security. It is an undergraduate course (does not qualify as graduate course) aimed to give the basic knowledge about the most common cryptographical mechanisms and their use in data and communication security systems.


General Information

  • Lectures (in English) by Prof. Kaisa Nyberg: Wednesday 8-10, room T1 and Friday 14-16, room T1.
  • Exercises by Kaisa Nyberg and Johan Wallén: Tuesday 12-14, room T2 or Friday 10-12, room T3.
  • The course starts on Wednesday, March 9.

  • Course material: The course is based on lecture slides which will appear on this page together with the weekly homework. The following two books are recommended as background reading as the course will contain a collection of material from both of them.
    • Network Security, Private Communication in a Public World, by C. Kaufman, Radia Perlman, Mike Speciner. Second edition, Prentice Hall 2002, ISBN 0-13-046019-2
    • Cryptography and Network Security, Principles and Practices, by W. Stallings. Third edition, Pearson Education 2003, ISBN 0-13-091429-0
  • In order to pass the course one has to pass the exam.
    • The last exam: Thursday, 5th of January, 2006 at 9-12 in T1
  • This course is replaced by T-79.4501 Cryptography and Data Security

Requirements

No formal requirements, but students are assumed to have basic knowledge about data networks and communication systems, on the one hand, and about discrete mathematics, on the other hand.
