Tik-79.240 Special Course on Computational Complexity

Course grades

The grade of the course is determined by the points earned from the home assignments and there is no final exam. Each assignment is graded with the scale 0-2 and the grade of the course is determined according to the following table.

Grade / Lower bound (from Max points)
1 / 26 p. (50 %)
2 / 29.5 p. (57 %)
3 / 33.5 p. (64 %)
4 / 37 p. (71 %)
5 / 40.5 p. (78 %)

where Max points are 52.

The Max points are based on 26 home assignments which was estimated to provide a rough balance between the workload required by the course and the credits for the course (3 cr). This means that these regular home assignments are those for the presentations until Nov 24: there are 28 regular assignments given by Nov 24 and at least 26 assignments have been available for each student (one cannot get points from an assignment related to one's own talk).

The rest of the assignments (one in the beginning and the assignments from talks on Nov 26 and Dec 1) are BONUS assignments that do not raise Max points but the points earned from them contribute to your total number of points. Hence, there are 7 such bonus assignments.

In addition, 5 EXTRA BONUS assignments will be provided which do not affect Max points but can increase your total. However, the extra bonus assignments are graded with the scale 0-1.5.

DEADLINE FOR ALL BONUS ASSIGNMENTS IS JAN 15, 1999. THIS IS A HARD NON-NEGOTIABLE DEADLINE.

Please return your assignments to the assistant Tommi Junttila by Jan 15, 1999. The normal bonus assignments will be graded by the corresponding speaker in one week after the deadline and the extra bonus assignments by the teacher.
